Today is Bank Transfer Day

Today is Bank Transfer Day. Remember that credit unions support your community. They also have agreements with other CUs to provide free ATMs everywhere you go; you don’t need to only use the one at same credit union where you bank. ABC News: Bank Transfer Day

Use paper already printed on one side – save trees and money!

Got off phone to hear cat puking up hairball on rug. Jumped up, spilling coffee all over pile of papers on desk. Silver lining: All were old (papers and cat) and could be thrown straight into recycling bin (papers, not cat.) Tip: Use paper in printer that’s already printed on one side. (I use for 99% of what I print.) Save trees and money!

An easy way to support a cause — maybe yours!

Just found out about this search engine, Goodsearch, that donates money to a nonprofit of your choice each time you use it to do a Web search (much like Google).

For now, I’ve chosen to support a local Oakland group, “Good Cents for Oakland,” but you can choose any group you like or add one. Those of you involved in a nonprofit organization might be able to get your group added to the list of recipients.

Caffeine’s buzz chases away women’s depression

Melissa Healy, News Report: “In the back-and-forth world of research on caffeine’s effects, the latest study suggests that women who get several jolts of java a day may do more than get a quick boost: Their mental health may see sustained improvement even as the physical stresses of aging accumulate. Among a large population of women tracked for as long as 18 years each, the women who routinely consumed the highest levels of caffeine were 20 percent less likely than those who drank little to none to become depressed when they were nearing or in their 60s.” Los Angeles Times, September 26, 2011.

Social security bonds good as gold

It turns out that social security bonds are even better than similar bonds owned by college endowment funds, widows, orphans and even the Chinese. (They all loan money to the U.S. government, which, despite its problems, is still the world’s safest haven for savings). Social Security bonds are not traded on the open market like other bonds, and they can always be redeemed at their face value. There is no interest rate risk. Opt out of receiving phone books

Avoid waste! If you don’t use them, opt out of receiving paper phone books (both Yellow Pages and White Pages): Yellow Pages Opt Out

According to the nonprofit YellowPagesGoesGreen.org, more than 500 million phone directories ”nearly two books for every American”are printed and distributed every year in the U.S., taking with them some 19 million trees. Upwards of 1.6 billion pounds of paper are generated to produce the books from these felled trees, while 7.2 million barrels of oil are churned through in creating them (not including the gasoline used for local deliveries). Producing the directories also uses up 3.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity and generates 268,000 cubic yards of solid waste that ends up in landfills (not including the books themselves, many of which eventually end up in landfills in areas where recycling is not available or convenient). Using a site designed in WordPress helps you get found

I was speaking to one of the web designers in my network who has become a WordPress expert. She congratulated me on having my website made over into a WordPress site and recommends that all her clients do so. WordPress is now commonly used for static sites not just blogs—in fact, you don’t even have to have an actual blog on your WordPress site (although you may still find many people referring to any WordPress site as a “blog”)

Having a WordPress site can save you money because you can make edits and additions yourself without having to have a web professional do it for you. An added plus is that, when you update more frequently, your site tends to appear much higher in search engines such as Google. Also, WordPress comes with several built-in search optimization (SEO) tools as well as a number of third-party plug-ins which can be used for SEO. Apparently there are now 25 million WordPress sites on the web, and the number is growing every day!
