It turns out that social security bonds are even better than similar bonds owned by college endowment funds, widows, orphans and even the Chinese. (They all loan money to the U.S. government, which, despite its problems, is still the world’s safest haven for savings). Social Security bonds are not traded on the open market like other bonds, and they can always be redeemed at their face value. There is no interest rate risk.
